Howard Thurston practices civil and structural engineering in Portland, Oregon. His firm, New Paradigm Engineering, seeks to collaborate with designers and builders who share the vision that radical systemic change is necessary in the design and construction of dwellings and other buildings. In this vision, buildings will be created in order to support the economic and social health of people and their communities and the ecological health of the entire ecosystem. Also, urban systems will be engineered to support local communities that, unlike the current models, truly make possible low energy lifestyles, and people of all financial means will have equal access to healthy buildings. His recent projects include new and remodeling construction, employing in some cases alternative materials such as straw bale and timber frames, and materials including structural insulated panels and insulating concrete forms. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Structural Engineers Association of Oregon.
