Apr - A conversation on Sustainable Community Development, Intentional Communities, and Green Building! - Please join Ben Kaufman and guests Syd Fredrickson and Bjorn Lunde. Ben Kaufman will discuss the principles of sustainability as applied to eco-villages, permaculture villages and new urbanism as experienced during his travels to Australia. Ben will also talk about the common threads found in green development and intentional community. Syd Fredrickson will talk about her experiences living in Twin Oaks, an intentional community, and discuss intentional community in terms of sustainability. Bjorn Lundi will talk about his experience as a founder of Rosewind, a cohousing project in Port Townsend, and green building.
We will follow our brief presentations with an open discussion on how to apply lessons learned from pioneer efforts of community building and green building to Seattle.
This meeting is open to the public! People new to the discussion of sustainable community development are encouraged to attend.
May - SOFTWARE TOOLS FOR GREEN BUILDING DESIGN - A demonstration of eight CD-ROM and internet-based tools that assist in various phases of a green building project ranging from the initial education of the project owner through the design and specification stages. The tools demonstrated will include Green Building Advisor, a green building brainstorming tool for professionals; SolarSizer, a program for sizing small-scale photovoltaics systems; The Green Home, a CD-ROM for homeowner education on eco-friendly home construction, remodeling, and maintenance; and GreenSpec, a directory of over 1,200 green building products targeting architects, builders, and designers.
Presenter: Christopher Gronbeck, proprietor of the local consulting firm Sustainable By Design and co-founder of the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology. (www.susdesign.com).
June - BREATHABLE versus tight wallS, PROS and CONS - Bau-biologists and a tight wall advocate discuss envelope construction and design. Patrick Carey, of Hadj design group, will present the topic and issues then each side will explain the weak and strong points of their respective positions. An open discussion will follow.
Presenters: Randy Niklas, owner of Controlled Environment, will present the pros and cons of the tight wall concept. Marston Gregory, a bau-biologist and owner of Build4Health, and Tim Seaton, owner of Timely Construction and also a bau-biologist, will present the pros and cons of breathable walls.
July -LOOK YOU CAN BUILD GREEN! - Northwest EcoBuilding Guild members showcase their ecobuilding projects. Home owners will meet leading professionals in the ecobuilding field and learn about design challenges, materials, costs, benefits, and get ideas for their own projects. Professionals will have the opportunity to see what their peers are doing and share experiences and knowledge.
Presenters: Jim Burton, of BLIP designlab, will talk about a current project with a photo-voltaic canopy, rainwater collection, heat recovery and more. Patrick Carey, of hadj design, will present his new home that incorporates various green features. Scott Finley, of Energy Options Northwest, willshow an environmental remediation project that involved water damage, mold, rodent infestation, afreon leak, and other problems. George Ostrow, of Velocipede Architects, will present a slide show of several recent homes.
Sept - Green Roofs - The Northwest EcoBuilding Guildэs Green roof project leader Patrick Carey will give an update on the Green roof project, which is currently slated to install the first two roof projects in mid-September. A brief summary of the group's findings on green roof materials, soils and plants will be presented, along with a general "what we've learned" and an outline of the next year of the project. A must for any interested in green roofs.
Oct - A Ray of Sunshine In the Winter Darkness - Incorporating daylighting in your new residential or remodeling projects can bring multiple health benefits while helping the environment. Home owners will learn what daylighting is, how it works, how it benefits you and how to incorporate it in your home. For design and construction professionals, the presentation includes a short update on the latest daylighting information and technologies. Daylighting expert Barbara Erwine of Cascadia Conservation presents.
