Dear Member,
As we move rapidly to the close of 2009, we would like you to consider making a charitable donation to the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild (NWEBG) as part of a No-Waste Holiday Season drive that kicks off our Capital Campaign for 2010. From Thanksgiving to New Years Day, household waste increases by more than 25%, adding up to an additional 1 million tons a week to the nation's municipal waste stream. Why not donate instead, on behalf of a loved one, to a favorite and effective grassroots non-profit!
2009 has seen many exciting developments for the Guild. We were the only green building organization to be nominated for the national Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainable Housing. In fact, it was estimated that since 1993 NWEBG has reached over 25,000 people in the Cascadia Bioregion with its educational events. We do this as a volunteer organization, as some of you know through your own volunteering efforts past and/or present.
And it is time to take our mission of transforming the built environment and ensuring the needs of the seventh generation, mainstream. In line with this goal the regional board has now completed its Five Year Strategic Plan. As the construction industry wakes up to green, the Guild as one of the elders of green building has a responsibility to share its knowledge. Industry professionals as well as the general public need to know about us, to find us and to benefit from our members’ expertise. Therefore we have some timely educational tools and programs to fund, in addition to orchestrating a major overhaul of the Guild’s public image to enhance its effectiveness.
As the first part of this overhaul, you recently received the Guild’s new Logo, Member Logo and Seal. After conducting a member survey, the website is our next major task. That project is now underway guided by Groundwire. The estimated cost of the new website, with all of the bells and whistles that will enable us to serve our diverse membership over three States, is $45,000. We have already raised $15,000 and have some beginning pledges for more.
I am reaching out to each one of you to say that collectively we can do this. Indeed, if we each donate $100 spread over the next five months we have completed this goal. And if you can do more than $100 over the next five months or you can donate $30 or more a month for a year, we can rapidly advance our other goals and objectives.
I understand that 2009 has been a very taxing year for many of you with the downturn in the economy. If you cannot find now or in the ensuing months $$s to spare, then please accept our wishes that 2010 be brighter economically for you. And there are always other ways to support the Guild. Bring in a new member and/or bring back a lapsed member! Consider volunteering on one of your chapter committees or at the regional level. True change is affected by the many, and in different ways.
So with the coming holiday season, I wish you all a joyous time with your loved ones. And on behalf of the board I thank each of you for doing your part in your community to ensure the needs of the seventh generation.
Warm regards, Fiona Douglas-Hamilton President
