The Rise of Hempcrete & Its Adoption in the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC):
Hempcrete is a carbon-sequestering, natural insulation material with exceptional hygroscopicity and thermal performance. Among many attributes, hempcrete provides a healthy, fire-, mold-, rot- and pest-resistant insulation envelope. As hemp fiber cultivation and processing infrastructure expand in the U.S. in the wake of the 2018 Farm Bill, hempcrete construction is on the rise across the country and the globe. Once a method requiring Sisyphean efforts for permitting, the International Code Council (ICC) has now formally adopted hempcrete—referred to as “hemp+lime construction”—as an approved wall infill in the 2024 International Residential Code appendix. ICC officials advise that building permitting departments can now use the new code guidance for proposed projects. This presentation delivers an exciting and updated overview of the outstanding performance and growing state of hempcrete construction in the U.S.
