Building Science in Practice: Strategies for Smarter, Healthier Enclosures

Dive deep into the principles and applications of building science with the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild. This educational session explores the fundamentals of building science and their application in the field. Are you interested in how moisture management, air sealing, vapor control, and thermal performance come together to create durable, comfortable, and energy-efficient buildings? Whether you’re an experienced BS pro, builder, architect, or curious homeowner, this session will offer you something new from fundamental insights to applied practice from recent case studies.

Jason Acosta

Jason is a Principal at RDH Building Science with over a decade of experience in building enclosure consulting and energy-efficient design. He holds a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and is a licensed Professional Engineer. Jason has extensive experience creating building enclosure drawings, reviewing construction documents, and making building enclosure performance recommendations for new construction projects. On rehabilitation projects, Jason leads the design effort and manages the production of construction documents for permitting. With a focus on energy code compliance, Jason works closely with contractors, architects, and stakeholders to deliver high-performance building enclosures.

Dan Whitmore

Dan Whitmore is a seasoned construction professional with a career spanning since 1987, encompassing roles as a carpenter, general contractor, builder, and consultant, alongside experience as a designer and FEMA Inspector. His foundational understanding of high-performance building was shaped at a young age by his family’s construction of an award-winning Solar Home in 1977. This early exposure fueled a passion that led him to become a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC®) and complete one of Washington State’s pioneering passive house projects in 2010. With a portfolio now exceeding 40 passive building projects as either designer, constructor, or consultant, Dan brings a wealth of practical experience to the field of building science.

Combining over three decades of hands-on construction knowledge with a deep commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability, Dan Whitmore is a recognized expert in building science, particularly in the realm of Passive House standards. He currently contributes his expertise through Indicator, his consulting firm focused on energy, durability, and constructability, and Cascade Built, a developer of sustainable multifamily projects. Furthermore, Dan is a dedicated educator and advocate, serving as an Instructor at Phius, co-developer of their Certified Builder Training program, Council Chair of the Phius Alliance, and a founding board member of Passive House Northwest. His multifaceted involvement underscores his significant influence in evolving building practices towards higher performance and sustainability.
